Words of Wisdom from Buddha

1. Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.

2. Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.

3. Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it.

4. Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

5. In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.

6. When you realize how perfect everything is you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky.

7. All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.

8. As you walk and eat and travel, be where you are. Otherwise you will miss most of your life.

9. You are the community now. Be a lamp for yourselves. Be your own refugee. See for no other. All things must pass. Strive on diligently. Don't give up.

10. It is a man's own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.

11. The whole secret of existence is to have no fear. Never fear what will become of you, depend on no one. Only the moment you reject all help are you freed.

12. No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.

13. However many holy words you may read, however many you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act upon them?

14. Physical charm attracts the eyes, goodness attracts the mind.

15. Doubt everything. Find your own light.

How restaurants dupe customers in the name of service tax and service charges

Each time you dine out, the bill that is handed over to you has several components ranging from service tax to service charge to value added tax which raises the amount to be paid up by several notches. While nearly every consumer is bothered by multiple additional charges, not all know the difference between these supplementary charges levied on the bill.
Service charge: These are the charges that are levied by the restaurant for the services rendered to the customer. This portion of the bill goes to the restaurant. The establishments are free to charge any amount as service charges as there are no guidelines provided by the tax authority. The charge varies from 5% to 10%. This amount is equivalent to the tips that people usually give to waiters. The charges are supposed to be shared among the staff.

The ground rule is that if the menu mentions service charges, they have to be paid but if there is no mention of any such charges, the customer has the right to question them.
Service tax: It is the tax levied by the government on the services rendered by restaurants. Service tax is same in all states. The service tax rate has been hiked from 12.36% to 14% from June 1. The restaurant must be air-conditioned for the service tax. The problem here is that most of the customers are taxed at the full bill and not on the 40% of the bill as directed. To make things simple, service tax should be 40% of the total bill. Hence whenever you see service tax on the total bill exceeding about 5%, you can question it.
Service tax came into effect in 1994 and was introduced by the then Finance Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Earlier Service Tax was payable only on a specified list of services but Pranab Mukherjee while delivering his budget speech on March 16, 2012 announced that this Tax would be applicable on all services except the negative list of services.
VAT (Value Added Tax): There is another tax called VAT that is state specific. The rates can be as low as 5% and as high as 20% depending upon the states. Moreover, VAT for food items and drink are different. Many restaurants might club food items and drink and charge a flat rate on the total bill. In such cases, it is good to ask for separate bills for food and drinks. This should clearly show the different VAT for both the items.
While most of the times, nothing can be done about overcharging but customers can always question and explain the tax structure to get the bill corrected.

Benefits of Onions

Wow- very interesting....Everyone should read

ONIONS! I had never heard this!!!
PLEASE READ TO THE END: IMPORTANT
In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu...
Many of the farmers and their families had contracted it and many died.
The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.
Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser. She said that several years ago, many of her employees were coming down with the flu, and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.
Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:
Thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmer's story...but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia, and, needless to say, I was very ill... I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an empty jar, and place the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs...sure enough it happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.
Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.
This is the other note. Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don't know what to blame. Maybe it's the onions that are to blame. Onions absorb bacteria is the reason they are so good at preventing us from getting colds and flu and is the very reason we shouldn't eat an onion that has been sitting for a time after it has been cut open.
LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS
I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of mayonnaise. Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned from a chemist.
Ed, who was our tour guide, is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially-made mayo is completely safe.
"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the summer picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table, and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.
Ed says that, when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the ONIONS, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES.
He explained onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.
It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!). Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.
Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.
Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to use it to cook the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning.
Please pass this on to all you love and care about.

12 Things Every Man Must Experience At Least Once in Life

This is an copy of the article from Mensxp.com that I found on facebook. I am fortunate enough to have experienced 11 out of the 12. And the one that is missing I am not sure if I will ever be there. But don't regret it though.Love the life I have lived! :)
Most of us get so caught up in the mundane that we never really explore the endless possibilities life has to offer. But there are certain experiences everyone needs in their lives that makes them evolve as a person. Here, we talk about 12 things every man needs to experience before dying.

1. Living In A Strange Country - "Let's find a beautiful place to get lost in."

Setting off on new paths that lead you to unknown, strange locations where nobody knows you is life changing. Figuring out life, all alone, is something not everyone gets to experience. Do it while you can, and discover your true self.

2. A Heartbreak - "Guess what, Life moves on."
Heartbreaks may be devastating but they always teach you a thing or two. Life moves on, and there’s no better of way of realising it than getting your heart broken.

3. A Solo Trip - "There are some places on earth where you can only go alone. Embrace the beauty of your solo journey."

Pack your bags and head out on a journey without any company, without the surety of having someone around. The idea may seem scary, but trust us you’ll discover a new side to your personality!

4. Companionship of a Dog - "A Dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself."

One who hasn’t loved a dog and been loved back hasn’t experienced unconditional love. It is one of the rarest, purest, most unique bond you will ever make in your entire life.

5. Getting Drunk Out of Your Wits - "Lets get drunk and tell each other and tell each other everything we're too afraid to stay sober."

It is good to be a responsible drinker, but every once in a while, you should loosen up! Drunken nights where you do things you don’t remember the next day always make for great stories. Not being your usual self, being totally out of control is something worth experiencing at least once in life!

6. A Road Trip - "Life is a trip. Plan your next vacation."

At least one road trip before you hit your thirties is a must. It is a completely different experience from the regular destination vacations you’ve been going on your entire life. So, hop in to your car and set out on a life-altering journey with your best buds!

7. Living Alone - "Be on your own."

Nothing makes you wiser than being on your own, completely. While you’re young, move out, even if for a while and live on your own. It’ll make a man out of you.

8. Being The Best At What You Do - "Be the best."

We’re all average in most things we do. And, we die being ‘the average man’. At least once in your life, feel the high of being ‘the best one’, even if for a moment. Take up a job you really, really love and conquer the world. No matter how small the skill may be, it will make you feel ‘on top of the world’.

9. Failure - "Failure defeats losers but it inspires winners."

Yes, fail at least once. Failure is as life-changing as success, probably even more. Don’t be afraid to lose. Failure will only make you stronger. Until you know failure, you won’t know be able to appreciate success. Those who hit rock bottom and make their way up make legends.

10. Being Fearless - "Once you become fearless. Life becomes limitless."

Every man needs to know how liberating it is to make his own rules instead of mindlessly conforming to conventions. For once, be who you really are, free from all obligations. Be fearless. Say what you mean, do what you feel like. At least once, you should know what it feels like to not have any fears at all.

11. Being Completely In Touch With Nature - "One touch of nature is all we need."

Spend some time in a totally natural surrounding, with no traces of technology or urban life. Test yourself out one day in the woods and see if you can survive. Look around, observe. Take a plunge into the vast greens of the forest, deep azures of the sea, endless skies. Not only will you realize how tiny you are in the whole universe, you will discover your soul!

12. Conquering Your Fear - "Everything you want is on the other side of fear."
Every one needs to know fear, and more importantly, what it feels like to conquer it. You must do at least one thing that scares you out of your wits and see yourself emerging stronger. Conquer your fear. Evolve.

SA Cricket Team - Samurai Story

An extract from 'South Africa Cricket Team needs a new narrative' by Dr.Ken Jennings

Here is the story of the two samurai warriors who were pitted against each by their respective emperors to fight to the death to see which empire would be victorious and so able to annex the other. There was a lot at stake. Before the fight each warrior went into solitary meditation for about a week. To meditate on what? The story goes that they meditated on their death. They made peace with dying. They did this since the worry of death during the fight would have distracted their focus, which would result in their death. They both knew that only one would remain, yet there was a serenity in both as they faced each other.

Amitabh Bachchan - Poem

Born on February 5th

If your birthday is on February 5, you can be quite a pig-headed person. You want your independence but live by certain standards. You inspire other people but you are also an egotistical people’s person who can talk to just anyone. You take care of your home but you can be frivolous. You are disciplined, believe in equality, are honest, instinctive, artistic, friendly, headstrong, a loner, fickle, stubborn, and indulgent.
